But how you go about insulating an older home can have a big impact on its ability to retain heat and air quality. This article explores insulation options and techniques that are compatible with existing walls and attics without major demolition.

Before beginning any work, make sure you have proper personal protective equipment (PPE) in place, including a face mask, goggles and gloves. This will prevent dust and other airborne contaminants from traveling through your living spaces. Wearing PPE can help you avoid breathing in fiberglass particles and other materials that may be contained within the insulation you’re removing from your attic. If possible, remove rolled or batt insulation from wall cavities and dispose of it in large trash bags to reduce the amount of waste you have to take out to the curb.

Once you’ve geared up, start by inspecting your attic space to determine what kind of insulation you need to add. Ideally, you should add blown-in cellulose or fiberglass batts that meet DOE standards. Both of these options provide excellent thermal protection and can be installed without major damage or disruption to your attic.

Before adding new insulation, check your attic for any live knob and tube wiring. Knob and tube wiring should be disconnected or covered before installing insulation, as it can create a fire hazard. The best way to locate and identify this type of wiring is by having an electrician do a wire identification.
